Main Contractor: Building Devon
Architects: StudioExe Architects
Project: The Garden Studio – garage, home office, and music room
Project Overview
Building Devon were commissioned to construct a low-energy garden studio on the grounds of a listed 18th-century home in Devon. Designed by StudioExe Architects, the brief included creating a space that combined practicality and leisure: a garage, music studio, golf simulator, and home office, alongside amenities for the adjacent tennis courts. The building was designed to Passivhaus standards, featuring triple glazing, underfloor heating, and an air source heat pump for maximum efficiency.
Externally, the studio boasts a striking contemporary aesthetic with charred timber cladding, black brick plinth, and a zinc standing seam roof, while sliding pocket doors open onto a large deck, blending indoor and outdoor living.
Electrical Challenge
With such a technology-heavy specification, the greatest challenge lay in delivering the right level of power and infrastructure to support:
- A state-of-the-art golf simulator
- Professional-grade music studio equipment
- Automated roller blinds for blackout mode
- Underfloor heating controls
- General power distribution for the garage and home office
This required careful planning, ensuring the new installation not only met the extensive energy demands but also integrated seamlessly into the building’s low-energy performance strategy.
Our Solution
Electrix delivered a full electrical installation, including:
- Running new supplies to the garden studio from the main house
- Installing a robust distribution system to handle peak loads
- Discreet cabling solutions to preserve the clean, contemporary interior design
- Integration of power with the heating and ventilation systems to ensure efficiency
- Future-proofing the installation to allow for upgrades as technology advances
Outcome
The completed project combines high-end technology with sustainable design principles, providing the client with a flexible space that works as both a professional environment and a leisure retreat. From enjoying a film with blackout blinds to practising a golf swing, the garden studio demonstrates how modern electrical design underpins the functionality of innovative buildings.
Electrix are proud to have supported Building Devon and StudioExe Architects on this one-of-a-kind project, ensuring that the client has reliable, safe, and efficient electrical infrastructure for years to come.
